Plot: The brothers Chow Nunn and Chow Lui's giant computer company is facing a tense crisis - a powerful computer virus is rapidly wiping out their computer network. At the last minute a cyber-friend arrives to join the battle. The mysterious 'Angel.com' battles the virus and saves the company. Invited by Chow Lui for a visit in person, Angel.com arrives in the form of the beautiful Lynn. But it turns out Lynn is a professional assassin with amazing high-tech and kung fu skills. She kills Chow Lui with cyanide hidden in a pair of sunglasses. She's aided by her sister Sue, who operates the pair's World Panorama surveillance system, which allows them to tap into any video security system in the world. Young cop Kong Yat Hong and her partner Mark are put on the case. Hong has a brilliant mind and immediately senses she's dealing with a killer with very special skills. Realizing they are facing a tough adversary, Lynn and Sue become fascinated with Hong as well. Lynn runs into Yan, the cousin of an old friend who died. Lynn and Yan shared an unspoken love in the past which is now rekindled in the open, and Lynn begins to question whether she wants to continue to be an assassin. Chow Nunn was behind his older brother's death. He hired Angel.com to kill Lui because Lui opposed Nunn's business plans, and also because Nunn is carrying on a secret affair with Lui's wife. But when Hong's investigation starts to point to Nunn, Nunn becomes worried and decides to hire Angel.com for another hit ^� only so he can double-cross them, wipe them out and prevent them from leading the police back to him. Yan tells Lynn he loves her and wants to marry her. After battling an attack by robbers with her amazing martial arts skills, she tells Yan her family's history. Her father invented the World Panorama for use by the authorities, but was turned down. Suspiciously, word of the device got out to the underworld and both parents were brutally killed in front of the girls' eyes by criminals eager to get their hands on the invention. Bereft at the loss of their parents and disillusioned with the law, the sisters turned professional assassins, killing criminals for other criminals. Lynn tells Sue she wants to stop their criminal life and get married ^� she won't accept Chow Nunn's order for the second killing. But Sue, angry and feeling abandoned by Lynn, decides to carry out the killing herself. Lynn realizes what's happening and rushes to save Sue, who doesn't have the skills to carry out the hit. They are attacked by Chow's men but escape. The writers get no points for creating a cohesive or logical plot. It's all over the place. A guy creates a worldwide spying device and then he's killed in an attempt to steal it. Years later his two daughters use the device to become hired assassins and get away with all their crimes. One of the sisters falls from some Korean sex symbol and decides she wants to stop killing people for money. The other sister wants to keep going and so she tries to do a job on her own and she screws up. There's a rookie cop who pretty much figures it all out and she's hot on the sisters' <more>
trail. One of the guys who paid for a hit decides he wants to wipe out the sisters and the cop and then it's all kicking and shooting and wire fu for the last exciting 20 minutes or so. Like I said, the story is pretty poorly put together but you will enjoy almost every moment any of the sisters or the cop is on the screen. Karen Mok is brilliant as the tough, smart, sassy and sexy cop. Shu Qi and Vicki Zhao make for the cutest sisters you'll ever see on screen. Whenever any of these characters are fighting with good guys, bad guys, one another or each other, you will be amazed at the stylized kung fu artistry. Yes, there's a lot of wires and camera trickery but it never takes away from the enjoyment. And how many movies can turn "Close To You" into a action theme? Don't watch the English dubbed version if you can avoid it. Watch it either in Mandarin or Cantonese for full enjoyment.
If you are looking for a cerebral piece, you should look elsewhere. This screenplay is certainly not going to win any major writing accolades but within the context of this genre, the plot is believable, logical and fairly easy to follow. ***Spoiler's Alert*** In a way, Lynn's Qi Shu death which was indirectly caused by the action of her sister Sue Zhao Wei was a nice ironic twist which might have even caused a few tears to be shed. this show slick is an understatement. It's ultra chique and ultra slick. The sets, the ultra high tech special effects, the costumes, the direction and the action sequences give this film an anime quality. The pacing of the show is also superb as it kept me glued to the seat throughout the whole show. The two leading women Zhao and Qi are both drop dead gorgeous and yet they are not exploited in the film in any sexual manner. They just exude so much natural sex appeal. Insofar as the score, I am pleasantly surprised it is not filled with clicheish heavy metal sequences which seem to be prevalent in this genre of film. In fact, a lot of the music in the show is presented in a lush but sensitive way. I also thought the use of the old Carpenters hit "Close to You" in the early fighting sequence was a very special touch. The mood of the song is such an antithesis to the action on the screen that it gives the audience a sudden sense of surreal detachment. I have watched countless Hong Kong produced films but "So Close" is a definite quantum leap from previous efforts. I am so impressed and mesmerized by this delicious film that I have already ordered a DVD copy of this film for my video library. A definite 10!!!
Must admit it was the cover that sold me on this one - 3 foxy Asian chicks in sexy cat suits and tooled up - and its a belting movie as well... Qi Shu plays Lynn who with her younger sister Sue Vicky Zhao run a high-tech assassination group - they do this because their Father designed a satellite surveillance system but got murdered by the gangsters who wanted it for themselves and the two sisters undertake to revenge themselves. building security systems with music - in this case The Carpenters Close to Me - so you end up with a kick ass Kung-Fu fight sequence set to Burt Bacharach.....which you don't see too often.... A local maverick cop Hong at Hong - Karen Wong is soon on their trail - things become complicated when the next hit they undertake turns into a set-up and soon the two sisters are fighting for their lives while trying not get arrested. Soon we are up to ears in car chases,gunfights and HK action fighting - all brilliantly done by Coery Yeun who was involved with both Crouching Tiger and The Matrix - there is a also a central bond between the two sisters that provides an emotional core that acts as a counter-balance to all the action. An event takes place half way through that is the pay-off to all this and Sue and Hong join forces against the rest of the bad guys more than a hint of John Woo's The Killer resulting in some really stunning stunts and wire-work. The whole thing culminates in a bloody samurai sword fight and with more than a hint of lesbianism thrown in this is the kind of movie that Taratino gets his rocks off to.... The 3 leads are all excellent - Qi Shu is stunningly beautiful she was the girl in The Transporter and the whole thing is done with such style and grace it proves just how ahead of the pack Hong Kong still is.

Immediately one of my favorite movies. Excellent action, great use of CGI, a few jarring "impossibilities", but overall an excellent action-thriller.Here's the thing: I didn't know who Vicki Zhao was, so she didn't impress or disappoint me. I had seen Shu Qi in "Gorgeous" and didn't like her much in that, so she impressed me with her range of acting in this movie, to tell the truth. In fact, all three female leads were impressive in some of the thoughts and emotions they communicated in nothing more than a quirk of an eyebrow or a twitch of the lips. But I <more>
came away totally impressed with Karen Mok. I know her as a singer, and have always considered her a little arrogant or conceited. I don't consider her half as sexy as she seems to be generally considered. But I *liked* her character in this movie, and that must be largely attributed to her acting and scene presence.I think they played up the "sexy" angle of the girls too much. They are all quite attractive, yes, but the attempts to take advantage of that sometimes distracted the movie...to me, inadvertent sexiness has far more impact than when it is shoved in your face. Still, an excellent movie. Well worth seeing....and for what it's worth, I liked the sound-mixing on the gunshots. Excellent heavy/punchy sound that really communicated what it might feel like to get shot.
I really enjoyed this movie. This time, it's not Chinese male who rule an action movie, but Chinese women. But above that I really enjoyed the relationship between the two sisters. How a movie is touching you depend of your life. I lost my parents I lost my daughter and may be this is why I was touched by this movie. I would like to have the version of close to you from this movie. I also liked the play with the camera. One of my favorite scene, is when Lynn in the french version jump out of the window at the beginning while her sister is asking her to not forget the cake.Martial

i've seen this film as its intended to be. in mandarin and english. as such the dubbing problem was not really an issue. you get to hear almost everyone in their own voice save for perhaps a few non-essentials. personally i felt the character of zhao was not fully developed, while certain scenes are totally unbelievable. the general plot is so typical of a hong kong movie, however there are a few surprises along the way.what should be commended are the camerawork, use of digital graphics and the director's interpretation of how the story should flow. its totally so un-hongkong, its <more>

Let's talk about prerequisities first.If you hate American action flicks, if you don't revel in nerve-wrecking psycho-dramas too badly, if you can appreciate style over substance and if you're into asian cinematography, pick So Close.Rest assured there's plenty of nonsense in this movie, even cliches from time to time, but there's not enough of it to prevent you from enjoying it. While Shu Qi is, of course, exquisitely beautiful, her robotic acting quickly becomes boring and is not what makes So Close such a great action film. Thankfully, the film is primarily a female 'buddy' film, focussing on Shu Qi's kid sister co-bandit Vicki Zhao and Zhao's evolving relationship with policewoman Karen Mok. Zhao and Mok manage to infuse a standard HK action plot with emotion and complexity, and the film becomes "The Killer" meets "24 Hours."
