I don't know why this movie got bad reviews. It's good horror! (by sadielynnlehman)
I'm giving this movie a ten out of ten because for some reason it got a lot of bad reviews. I watch a lot of horror movies and this one definitely deserves a better score than a 4.7. If you like jump scares and are a horror movie fan in general, it's worth a try. I loved it. If you enjoy a creepy story with good acting, which is hard to say for a lot of horror movies these days, watch it.
Finally a good horror!!!! (by flitz4543)
Obviously the average crtic thinks that a movie with the Amityville name should never ever happen again especially when it's a bigger budget film. Well they did and did an amazing job. This movie proved many critics wrong so much that it was prevented from being released for years. A 5.1 on IMDb? I think not!! A solid 6.8 definitely. It's a shame us horror fans were punished because of egos and Hollywood bs. If you go in to this just wanting to be entertained and not thinking what should and shouldn't be you'll whole heartedly enjoy this film. Obviously there was no one that <more>
moved in to the amityville house that was based on any character in this movie. But I don't care same way I didn't care that penny wise is a fictional character
This is one of the best horror movies I have seen. It has a great story lines It also has great acting. It very scary. This is part 18 to the Amityville series and It is the best one I have seen. This a great movie. See it.
I enjoyed it! Really entertaining film. (by milosprole9)
They finished filming 'Amityville: The Awakening' in 2014 and supposed to release in 2015, but release date delayed more than once. Anyway, my waiting time is over. I finally saw it last week! And I have to say that I absolutely loved it.What's it about? In 1974, 'he' murdered his entire family as they slept in a haunted house, in Amityville, but 40 years later, a single mother that moves her three children into that the same house. This movie is terrific, crazy and scary with some creepy moments. But yet, it's a lot of fun to watch. It has great jump scares! I found <more>
the twists crazy. One thing in this movie made me surprise is that they showed the actual Amityville DVDs the original, Amityville II: The Possession and the remake and I loved how they showed it in this Amityville movie lol. They said new versions are boring, so they picked the original to watch and some of the characters watched it on TV. 😂Let's talk about the characters: Bella Thorne gave a likable character, good acting and she showed her emotional moments. She wasn't dumb, neither annoying. She seemed awesome when she was fighting with the demon in the last scene.Jennifer Jason Leigh gives a creepy performance. She played really crazy mother who already knew about the 'Amityville Horror' murders and she thought everything would be better in a possessed house in Amityville, but she was also good. She did a good job.Cameron Monaghan was really creepy as looking. He was easily the best and creepiest part of the movie.Remember, it's not a perfect film, and it's not for everyone, but if you waited to see it in a long time or if you liked the 2005 version, Rob Zombie's Halloween, etc. you definitely should to see it.Note: It's not a remake, neither another sequel. It's a reboot! By the way, it's still better than quite a few of the actual sequels. It's just an entertaining film!
Not sure whether this movie was supposed to be a sequel or reboot but it was way better then that horrible movie with Ryan Reynolds from 2005 and all the other cheesy sequels like Amityville: the evil escapes, dollhouse, curse, it's about time, a new generation etc. To me the awakening felt like a good sequel to the original trilogy. It reminded me a little of part 2 the possession, just not as brutal and I liked the realism in the story when they watched the original Amityville horror DVD in the actual house at least in the the movies where the horror took place. The score was done <more>
really well and I liked the spooky feel and atmosphere of this film which worked well without the B-rated acting and cheap low budget special effects a lot of the sequels suffered from. All the actors in this movie did a good job making the characters feel real. Cameron Monaghan did an amazing job being possessed it was creepy. My issue with this movie was the cuts and some scenes in the trailers not shown, and in 1 scene there seemed to be a bad edit while they take James outside in his wheelchair. I wanted to know what the dialogue was before it was cut out during the conversation. I hope the director will eventually release an extended R-rated cut on DVD/blu ray with the deleted scenes and the original ending before the re- shoots. I would have preferred watching it on the big screen for my 1st time to get the full effect and can't believe after waiting 2 years it didn't get a wide theatrical release considering some of the other crap out there that did. This one deserved it & I don't know why so many people didn't like it. It was short but paced well I wasn't bored. If it does end up in my local theatre on Oct 28th i will go.
Much better than expected, best amityville film in years! (by sharpy625-391-526847)
As an Amityville fan I have seen all of the films, so I was prepared to watch yet another straight to video flop of a movie, considering this films release has been delayed for 2+years I was not expecting anything special. But finally this movie included everything that was missing from all the films since the evil escaped in Amityville 4. Im talking about the house! The house is exactly the same as the original movies even the interiors match somewhat. I also think that possession movies have been done to death, but this was such a new a perfectly horrific idea for a possession. Seeing a <more>
loved one waste away from disease is horrific by itself, the desperation to do anything to bring them back to life makes you sympathize with the mothers insanity of believing demonic reanimation would allow her to see him alive again.Having the characters discuss the amityville movies and the fact that nothing has happened in the house for 40 years was such a fun idea, getting to watch the amityville horror in the amityville house, that's something you would never expect. It was great!I had to give only 9 stars because the use of photos of the actual real house slightly ruined the are we in the movie or real life idea . It looks like the characters decided to move into the filming location in toms river used for the first 3 movies, and that Bella is looking at footage of the real house. Then they watch a movie which looks more like their house than the real house. It just doesn't work... but I love the movie version of the house, so I will try to forgive it.The characters were all very likable, the little girl was so cute, most of the amityville kids are just annoying. The ending was satisfying, he got to die. Pulling his body out of the ring was great because as a viewer you always think, why can't they just stand in the garden. The house can only hurt them in the house.
Infamous for its long history of delays, re-ratings and re-namings, "Amityville: The Awakening" has finally been released internationally, and it's a little gem that still haven't got the final form it deserved. Firstly the atmosphere and the look of this franchise installment are a big treat. By no means this is a trashy production. Cinematographer Steven Poster, famous for The "Donnie Darko", created some soft silky photography akin to childlike innocence, which of course dramatically contrasts the harsh events of the story. With its dream-like atmosphere and <more>
surreal logic partly probably a result of the production leapfroging new "Amityville" steps on the ground of some morbid nightmares, disarms the viewer and easily brings in all the spooks. Someone in the audience, while we all watched the movie, at some point even screamed in terror: "I don't understand what's happening!". It could be plainly because of the story-telling issues, but this movie also has plenty of dark and bold psychological twistedness pouring over the screen. New "Amityville" still has some gore, even with the PG- 13 rating R-rated goreness might make this movie way too depressing , but the good ol' suspense is at the center here with the haunted-house, haunted-youth themes. Bella Thorne is just beautiful period and also perfect for the deer in the headlights role, with a lovely Gothic teen angst style. Veteran actress Jennifer Jason Leigh gives a creepy performance of an overly fixated mother going through a faith and parental crisis. Leigh's as usually great in being very sweet and somehow lovecraftian at the same time. Her and Thorne's mother/daughter liaison is one of the best thrilling elements of the story. I haven't seen any other "Amityville" films, so it would be interesting for the fans of the original and the franchise itself to see what this new installment brings in prepare yourself for a tongue-in-cheek acknowledgement of the "Amityville" universe, which I found rather sweet . It has some cult-potential with all the R-rated version and Director's cut and alternate endings hopefully coming ahead even the trailer shows a lot of scenes that didn't get in theatrical cut . Yet, the production havoc is especially obvious in the abrupt ending of the movie. You know something went wrong when in the end you get a voice-over basically explaining the story you just saw. Probably, french director Franck Khalfoun good with artful gore, see "Maniac" 2012 was heading towards more ambiguity, but instead we get a rather anticlimactic ending and Thorne's incomplete character. Still a nice journey into the dark for all the fans of morbid spooks and especially for teenagers, who are going to be shocked. A lot of jokes will be made in terms of how "awakened" this movie really is. Actually "Amityville: The Awakening" resides perfectly on edge of still seeing a surreal bad dream with just a second away from opening your eyes into reality.
Good movie but I expected a greater deal from the ending (by andreea1606)
I gave it 8 out of 10. The movie had good jump scenes and a good story. I liked the fact that it made references to the older movies to clarify the plot. I expected more from the ending, I think I expected a twist but , all in all, good horror movie to watch! The actor had a good performance I recommend!
Positively surprised! (by Larsii90)
Im a huge horror fan, and I always check the general scores of horror flicks before I see them. Despite less than avarage score and many bad reviews, I watched it anyway because I've been waiting for its release a long time. I was positively surprised! It's not amazing, but a solid sequel and I liked how meta it was posing as a sequel to the first film, but then they brought up that film, the sequel and its 2005 reboot. Acting is OK, no really great characters, but absolutely good enough film for a sunday night. I've seen far worse many times the last year that were bigger hits.
